When a general returned victorious, a slave would stand beside him during his triumph, whispering "Memento Mori"—a reminder that even the greatest are mere mortals. The phrase, also expressed as "Hominem te esse memento" ("Remember that you are only a man"), symbolized humility and the fleeting nature of life.
